House Borewell Guide

How Deep Should a Borewell Be for a House?

You are planning a borewell for your home in Hyderabad. You want to know how many feet to drill. Here is the honest answer.

📅 10 October 2026 ⏱ī¸ 8 min read 📍 Hyderabad, India

Short answer

  • There is no one fixed depth for a house borewell in Hyderabad. It changes from plot to plot.
  • The right depth is the one where your plot gives enough water for your family, not a number someone quotes before drilling.
  • Hyderabad has hard rock below the ground. Water sits in cracks in the rock, and those cracks can be at different depths.
  • A deeper borewell does not always give more water. Sometimes it just costs more.
  • A good driller decides the final depth while drilling, after seeing what comes out of the ground.

Almost every house owner asks this before drilling. “How many feet should I go?”

It feels like a simple question. But the answer depends on what is under your plot. Two houses on the same road can need different depths.

This guide explains what decides the depth, why deeper is not always better, and what to ask your driller. It is written for residential borewell drilling in Hyderabad, where most plots sit on hard rock.

How deep should a borewell be for a house in Hyderabad?

Think of it this way. You do not choose the depth. Your plot chooses it.

In many parts of Hyderabad, house borewells go a few hundred feet. In some areas they go much deeper. In some lucky spots, water comes earlier. Nobody can tell you the exact number from the road.

Be careful if someone gives you a fixed number on the phone, without seeing your plot. That is a guess, not advice.

Simple way to remember

The goal is not “drill to 500 feet”. The goal is “reach enough water for my family, and stop when the plot has given what it can.”

What decides the depth of your borewell

Several things work together. Here are the main ones.

What changes the depth of a house borewell
FactorWhat it means for you
Your areaWater level is different in different parts of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Some areas have deeper water than others.
Rock cracksIn hard rock, water sits in cracks. Where the cracks are, and how many, changes the depth.
Nearby borewellsIf many borewells are already working around you, water may be harder to reach.
SeasonWater level is usually higher after good rain and lower in summer.
Your water needA small family needs less than a big house with a garden or many bathrooms.
Spot on your plotEven inside one plot, one corner can be better than another.

These are general factors. Your own plot can behave differently.

What is under your plot

Most people imagine a river under the ground. It is not like that in Hyderabad.

Below the soil there is hard rock, often granite. Water does not flow through solid rock. It collects in cracks and broken parts of the rock. Your borewell is trying to hit those cracks.

Layers under a typical house plot

A simple picture. Real depth changes from plot to plot.

Top
Soil and loose earthSoft. It can fall in, so this part usually needs a steel casing pipe.
Middle
Weathered rockBroken, crumbly rock. Sometimes holds a little water, but it can dry up in summer.
Deeper
Hard rock with cracksWater gathers in the cracks. This is where a lasting supply usually comes from.
Bottom
Solid rock, very few cracksDrilling further here may give little or no extra water.

This is why Hyderabad borewells can be so different from each other. You are looking for cracks, and cracks are not the same everywhere.

If you are still deciding where on your plot to drill, read our page on borewell drilling in Hyderabad to understand how drillers read a site.

Is a deeper borewell always better?

No. This is the biggest myth.

Many people think “more feet means more water”. That is not always true in hard rock. Water depends on cracks, not on feet.

When going deeper can help

  • Water in the top layer dries up in summer
  • Deeper cracks are known to hold water in your area
  • You need a steady supply all year

When going deeper may not help

  • The rock below is solid with no cracks
  • Your area is crowded with borewells
  • You only add feet, hoping for luck

Also remember the difference between “water found” and “water that lasts”. A borewell can show water on drilling day and still weaken later. The depth of the main water crack matters more than the total feet.

Please note

No driller can promise water at a fixed depth. Anyone who does is guessing. Water is confirmed only when drilling happens.

Your house needs and your pump

Before drilling, think about how much water your home really uses.

  • How many people live in the house?
  • How many bathrooms and taps?
  • Do you have a garden, a car wash area or a terrace tank?
  • Will you use it as your main water source or only as backup?

A small family using it as backup needs less than a big house depending on it fully.

The pump also matters. A pump is placed inside the borewell, above the bottom. The pump depth and the borewell depth are two different things. A wrong pump can make a good borewell look weak. See our page on borewell pump installation in Hyderabad to learn how pumps are matched to borewells.

Who decides when to stop drilling

This should be a shared, open decision. Here is how a fair process usually goes.

1

Pick the spot firstLook at the plot, the nearby borewells and the ground. Choose the best place before any drilling.

2

Watch what comes upWhile drilling, the driller checks the rock chips and any water that comes out. This tells them what is below.

3

Talk before going deeperIf the water is weak, the driller should explain the choice. Go deeper, or stop. You should know why.

4

Agree on the rate earlyAsk how extra feet will be charged, before the machine starts. No surprises later.

Depth and cost

Depth affects cost. In general, more feet means more drilling time, more pipe and more diesel. Many drillers also charge by the foot, so the final bill grows with depth.

That is one more reason not to fix a depth in advance. You may pay for feet your plot never needed.

For a clear idea of how drillers price this work, read our guide on borewell drilling cost in Hyderabad. Always ask for the rate in writing or on WhatsApp before the work starts.

Permission before you drill

Before you drill, check if you need permission for your plot. Rules in Hyderabad and Telangana can change, and they may depend on your area.

Read our page on borewell permission in Hyderabad, and check the latest rules with the Telangana Groundwater Department before you start.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Deciding the depth from a neighbour’s borewell. Their plot is not your plot.
  • Believing “more feet means more water”.
  • Not asking how extra feet will be charged.
  • Picking the spot only for convenience, without checking the ground.
  • Forgetting that the pump must match the borewell.
  • Drilling without checking permission rules for your area.

If your borewell was drilled earlier and the water has dropped, it may not need a new one. Sometimes an old borewell can be made deeper. See our page on borewell reboring in Hyderabad to understand the options.

What This Means for Your Borewell

  • Do not fix the depth first. Let your plot and the drilling guide the final number.
  • Remember cracks matter more than feet. Hard rock holds water in cracks.
  • Ask about extra-feet charges before drilling starts.
  • Plan your pump along with the borewell, not after.
  • Check permission rules for your area before you begin.
  • Be ready for a calm talk mid-drilling about going deeper or stopping.
Please note: Everything in this guide is general information for Hyderabad conditions. Depth, water amount and how long the water lasts are not guaranteed. They depend on your plot, your area and the season, and are confirmed only during drilling.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet should a house borewell be in Hyderabad?

There is no fixed number. Borewell depth for a house in Hyderabad depends on your area, the rock cracks under your plot and the season. A driller can only confirm the right depth while drilling.

Does a deeper borewell always give more water?

No. In hard rock, water sits in cracks. If there are no cracks below, extra feet may give very little. Deeper helps only when water-bearing cracks are there.

Should I stop drilling as soon as I see water?

Not always. Water in the top layer can dry up in summer. A good driller checks how strong the water is and talks to you before deciding to stop or go deeper.

How do I know how many feet to drill a borewell for my house?

You cannot know exactly before drilling. Choose a good spot, share your water needs with the driller, and agree on how extra feet are charged. Then decide together during drilling.

Can I make my existing borewell deeper later?

Often it can be tried, but it depends on the borewell condition and your ground. A site visit is needed to say if it is worth it. Read about reboring for more detail.
